Artist Bio
Tina Fridgen is a multimedia ecological artist, conservation advocate, and environmental educator based in Douro-Dummer, Ontario. Drawing on a background in biology and environmental science, her work bridges scientific observation, artistic exploration, and environmental stewardship. Alongside her studio practice, Tina teaches Biology and Environmental Science at Trent University, where her teaching and creative work both emphasize deep ecological awareness and connection to place.
Working in inks, acrylics, oils, spray paint, printmaking, and natural materials, Tina creates immersive, nature-inspired artworks that explore light, pattern, texture, and the quiet wisdom of forests and wild spaces. Her Biophilia series invites viewers to slow down, observe closely, and reconnect with the living world through sensory experience and reflection. Through layered multimedia processes and interactive installations, her work encourages curiosity, restoration, and conservation-minded engagement with nature.
Tina studied at the Peterborough Art School and is completing the Milan Art Institute Mastery Program, where she deepened both her technical practice and artistic voice. Her work has been exhibited at the Art Gallery of Peterborough, the Kawartha Studio Art Tour, and the Georgina Arts Centre. She is Gallery Coordinator for the Douro-Dummer Public Library and an Associate Member of Artists for Conservation and the East Central Ontario Art Association. Tina is also the founder of Douro Art Studios, where she develops workshops inspired by local ecosystems, ecological art practices, and community connection through creativity.
Artist's Statement
My name is Tina Fridgen, Environmental Educator, Multimedia Artist, and Founder of Douro Art Studios
My work is rooted in a biologist’s way of seeing—slow, sensory, observant, and deeply connected to place. Through multimedia painting, printmaking, natural pigments, and immersive installations, I explore the relationship between people and the living environments that sustain them. I am drawn to the layered complexity of forests, wetlands, light patterns, and organic textures, using these natural systems as both subject matter and teacher.
I create art as an invitation to pause, look closely, and reconnect with the natural world through curiosity, presence, and wonder. Many of my pieces are inspired by direct experiences in local wild spaces and reflect my belief that meaningful environmental stewardship begins with emotional connection. By bringing “forest moments” indoors, I hope to foster a sense of calm, restoration, and belonging while encouraging deeper reflection on our responsibility toward the ecosystems we inhabit.
My background in biology and environmental science strongly informs my creative process. Scientific observation, ecological relationships, and conservation themes are woven throughout my work, bridging art and science in ways that encourage both personal reflection and environmental awareness. Ultimately, I hope my work helps viewers rediscover their relationship with the living world—not as something separate from themselves, but as something they are intrinsically part of.
