What can I do to help conserve nature in my area?
Global environmental issues can be very overwhelming. People often want a quick fix to large complex issues. Just because an issue is complex it does not mean that you cannot impact change. Start small and believe in your individual impact. This page is designed to help you learn what you can do to help connect, conserve, and diversify nature where you live!
Things I can do from home
Nature offers endless free services for us and we can give back. Nature provides water, air, food, medicine, shelter, and a home, so we can feel small in comparison. There are many things you can do each day to give gratitude for our wild spaces and help conserve nature in your community.
Connect with Nature
Appreciating and being grateful for our natural spaces and your role within them is the first step. Start with a walk in a local forest or nature area. Slow down, take deep breaths, listen, and observe the life that is all around you - and say think you. Bring family, friends, and children outside and share this space with them. Here is a website that can help you learn about local nature trails.
Learn about the benefits of wild spaces
Spending more time in nature will reveal the benefits wild spaces can offer, and taking the time to learn more about these benefits can help us to appreciate to the fullest. Here is my short list of books and websites that can help you learn more about nature and the human connection.
Garden and Landscape for Diversity
Wilding your spaces at home will help create more space for beneficial wildlife and more opportunity to engage with nature.
Support your Local Conservation Authority
Local conservation authorities have the responsibility to.... learn more about the conservation authorities, their programs, and services near you.
Support Local Farmers and Businesses
As humans we are good at consuming and what we choose to spend our money on can support wild spaces. From the clothing we wear, to the food we eat, there are many decisions we make each day that can have significant impacts on our global environment. It can be overwhelming so you can start by buying local. Learning about local farmers and businesses is the easiest way that you can make the largest impact. Buying local you can decrease the carbon foot print from shipping/transportation, you can understand the impacts of that business on your local community, and have more control over where you money is going and who you are supporting.
